Frequently asked questions

A photography contract should cover: both parties' names and contact details, session type and date, location and duration, number of final edited images and delivery format, payment terms, cancellation and rescheduling policy, copyright ownership, client usage rights, and the photographer's portfolio rights. This template covers all of these in 9 clearly written clauses.
Yes, even for a one-hour portrait session. A contract sets clear expectations for both sides โ€” how many images will be delivered, in what timeframe, who owns the copyright, and what happens if either party needs to cancel. It prevents misunderstandings and protects you professionally.
In most jurisdictions, the photographer retains copyright by default. The client receives a personal use licence โ€” the right to print, share and display images for personal, non-commercial use. If the client needs commercial rights (for advertising, product packaging or resale), this needs to be negotiated separately and reflected in the fee.
This template includes a portfolio clause granting the photographer the right to display images on their website, portfolio and marketing materials. If you need confidentiality โ€” for example, for private corporate work โ€” amend this clause before signing to restrict portfolio use.
The deliverables clause specifies a minimum image count. If fewer edited images are delivered, the client may have grounds for breach of contract. For this reason, set a minimum you are confident you can achieve โ€” not an aspirational number. Some photographers prefer to write "approximately [X] images" rather than a strict minimum.
Yes, as a starting point. For commercial work, add a dedicated commercial licence clause specifying how and where images may be used (digital ads, print campaigns, product packaging, etc.), the territory and the licence duration. Commercial usage rights significantly increase the value of images and should always be priced separately from the session fee.
