Frequently asked questions
- Yes — once signed by both the photographer and the client, this contract creates legally enforceable obligations. To be binding, both parties must agree to its terms, which is established by signatures. Always keep a signed copy for your records.
- A solid wedding photography contract should cover: names and contact details of both parties, the wedding date, time and venue, number of images and delivery format, payment schedule (retainer + balance), cancellation and rescheduling terms, copyright and usage rights, and liability limitations. This template covers all of these.
- Most wedding photographers charge a non-refundable retainer of 25–50% of the total fee to secure the date. This is standard practice because booking a wedding means turning away other clients for that date. The template defaults to 25% — you can adjust this to match your own policy.
- In most jurisdictions, the photographer retains copyright to the images. The contract grants the client a personal use licence — the right to print, share and display photos for non-commercial purposes. If the client wants to use images commercially (e.g. advertising), that requires a separate licensing arrangement.
- Yes. This template is jurisdiction-neutral and works for weddings anywhere. For destination weddings we recommend adding a clause specifying which country's law governs the contract, and addressing travel expenses (flights, accommodation, transport) in the fee section.
- If the photographer cancels, this contract requires them to make reasonable efforts to find a qualified replacement at no extra cost to the client. If no suitable replacement can be found, all payments are refunded in full. Photographers should carry professional liability insurance to cover unexpected situations.
Bonsai auto-fills contracts, collects e-signatures and processes the deposit — all in one place.
